Aged patina

Exiting tech this morning, I caught sight of this old door knob again. It's made from brass and has a beautiful patina from exposure to the elements. It brings to mind the Japanese aesthetic where things are valued for their passage in time and not constantly buffed to a new finish. Japanese metal work employs various alloys of copper for exactly this property. Copper oxidises readily and with the right application of chemicals, a new product can take on an aged look.
